Special news release, March 28th, 2008.
The following is the unedited news release from the U.S. District Attorney's Office in Omaha: United States Attorney Joe W. Stecher, the Bellevue Police Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Plattsmouth Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration announce the following information for the attention of the media: Event Triggering this Release: Joseph W. Hofler, age 45 of Plattsmouth, Joseph M. Hofler, age 20 of Plattsmouth, Thomas A. New, age 43 of Plattsmouth, Jason M. Codr, age 28 of Murray, Andrew T. Smallridge, age 33 of Plattsmouth, Fred M. Huffman, age 29 of Murray, Ivan J. Hicks, age 35 of Murray, and Catherine A. Thomas, age 21 of Bellevue, all had their initial appearances on an Indictment before Magistrate Judge Thomas Thalken. All defendants were detained.
From September, 2007, until March, 2008, the law enforcement agencies listed above gathered store records and maintained surveillance on the above named defendants. Law enforcement utilized this information to obtain several search warrants which were executed on March 4, 2008. On March 19, 2008, the federal grand jury returned an indictment charging the above named defendants. All the defendants are charged with conspiracy to manufacture and attempt to manufacture 50 grams or more of actual methamphetamine and the possession of pseudoephedrine with the intent to manufacture methamphetamine. Joe W. Hofler and Thomas A. New were additionally charged with the actual manufacture of methamphetamine.
Names of Defendants: Joseph W. Hofler, Joseph M. Hofler, Thomas A. New, Jason M. Codr, Andrew T. Smallridge, Fred M. Huffman, Ivan J. Hicks, Catherine A. Thomas. Crime(s) Charged and Potential Penalty (A CHARGE is merely an accusation and every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty): conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine, attempt to manufacture methamphetamine, possession of pseudoephedrine with intent to manufacture methamphetamine, a minimum of ten years up to life in prison, a fine of up to $4,000,000, followed by supervised release of not less than five years and a $100 special assessment for each count of conviction.
